MPs consider changes to help tackle increasing cost of living

03 May 2022

With inflation increasing energy and food prices, ministers have pitched ideas to help tackle the cost-of-living crisis.

Inflation figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) recently showed that inflation rose to 7% in the year to March.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson called for innovative ideas that don't rely on spending taxpayer money to help combat rising prices. Amongst the ideas put forward by ministers were relaxing the frequency of MOTs and lowering the legal limits on adult supervision of children in order to reduce childcare costs.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak outlined that government departmental budgets are already set and warned that inflation should not be fueled further.

Meanwhile, Sir Ed Davey, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, called for an emergency Budget, a cut in VAT and a windfall tax on the profits of oil and gas companies.
